POETRY SLAM
By Taay’lor Laribo
Welcome Back Week was in full effect for the students of University of District of Columbia. The University held different events each day that welcomed the students, faculty and staff. The events also allowed friends and family to come out and support their loving Firebirds. Does literary work given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm put you in your comfort zone? If so, then Tuesday was the day for you. The university’s very own Editor and Chief of the Yearbook and student success Ria Thompson put together the greatest poetry slam ever, Words With Firebirds! The event was conducted 6pm to 8pm and held on Tuesday the 10th on campus at the amazing Amphitheater. The scene was set and was intensely beautiful. With the 15 talents and 50 spectators it made for a wonderful event. Rialistic Ria Thompson opened the event with “Purposely Prepared, the P poem” where she stimulated the audience’s minds and took them on a journey.
Delante Cherry’s What If We Never Grew We Just Shrank poetically confirmed that society today is confused. We as people and one of the powerful Nations of this world have forgotten the principles and morals America was made on. Michelle Williams alluded to confusion in reference to African Americans, in saying that they are “Genius trapped in a cage.” She painted a picture of Blacks stricken from poverty and rising above the turmoil. She depicted African Americans towards the end of her poem maybe one day being able to put away with the stereotypes and hopefully understand their roots, where they come from, and their potential they have inside. The uplifting poems recited from Words With Firebirds took the University’s poetry slam to new heights. We applaud the talents and the socialite herself Ria Thompson for an memorable and tremendous event.
